From Toy Gun to Real-World Creations: A Journey of Passion and Inspiration
BY JERRY CURNEW
This isn't just a story about a toy gun. It's a story about the spark of creation, a father's love, and a journey to bring dreams to life.
Picture this: a young boy, eyes wide with wonder, clutching a meticulously crafted toy gun, a gift from his father. That boy was me, and that toy gun, built over 40 years ago, ignited a fire in me that still burns bright today.
From a young age, I was drawn to the world of creation. I felt most alive when I was bringing ideas to life, whether through art, design, or anything that allowed me to express myself.
My creative journey began in the world of print. As a teenager, I designed tear-off coupons for grocery stores. It was a start, but I yearned for more. I wanted to unleash the full force of my imagination.
So, I packed my bags and headed to the vibrant city of Toronto to study Multimedia Production. I immersed myself in the world of graphics, web design, film, and television. I became the go-to guy for bands needing logos, photos, or websites. My creative energy was flowing, but something was missing.
Despite my success in the digital realm, I longed to create something tangible, something I could hold in my hands. Just like my Dad's toy gun, a constant reminder of the power of creation. It had been with me through every move, every office, every rec room – a silent sentinel inspiring me to build and create.
Years passed, and I found myself in a comfortable management position in television production. But the desire to create never faded. It was a burning need, an unstoppable force within me.
Then, life took an unexpected turn. I found myself single after almost two decades. It was a time of self-discovery and new beginnings. And that's when I met Rox, the woman who would change my life forever.
Rox encouraged me to pursue my dreams, to embrace my passion for creating tangible, real-world objects. With her unwavering support, I took the leap.
I started small, crafting home décor items in my basement workshop. But my Dad's toy gun, proudly displayed on the wall, served as a constant reminder of my ultimate goal.
Today, I work in a much larger workshop, surrounded by the tools of my trade. And above my mitre station, in the place of honor, hangs that same toy gun. It's a symbol of the joy of creation, a testament to the power of a father's love, and a constant source of inspiration.
Now, I build furniture, cutting boards, and intricate 3D carvings. I work with live edge lumber and pour epoxy, bringing my digital designs to life in the real world. And with every piece I create, I feel the same joy and wonder I felt as a boy holding that toy gun.
My journey has come full circle. From a simple toy gun to a workshop filled with creations, I've embraced my passion and found true fulfillment. And it all started with a father's love and a spark of inspiration.
